Natasha Wing Shares about Encouragement, Community, and Opening Doors for Curiosity Through Books

I had the great pleasure of interviewing Natasha Wing, also known as The Night Before Queen on Why We Write for this week. Aaaaand, the timing worked out perfectly that this is coming out the week before her birthday (Feb. 7)!

On top of that, one of her latest translated titles is The Night Before My Birthday(La noche antes de mi cumpleaños) illustrated by Amy Wummer and translated by Georgina Lázaro!

Natasha has been writing and publishing books for children for over 33 years and has a variety of fiction, nonfiction, and even joke books that you can check out on her website.

I had such a great time hearing about her journey and especially soaking in all her words of encouragements to other writers out there.

Some of my favorite parts of our talk were:

  • When she talked about one of the questions she’s always asked at school visits: “Ms. Wing, what’s your favorite book (project)?”

  • Her ways of refilling her creative well…especially the bit about potato chips!

  • What she wished she’d known when she first began years ago: ways to advocate for herself and embrace all the ways to tell a story including illustration.

  • The most important part: HAVE A FUN JOURNEY in this wild writing life we all lead.

You can connect with Natasha on her website, Facebook Page, or Instagram.

Thank you again to Natasha for taking the time to speak with me. Make sure you’re all caught up on Why We Write including last week’s episode with Vivian Kirkfield.

Up next, Sharon Giltrow will give us a window into her writing journey.
